Abstract

Literature is of paramount importance to the Portuguese language in Basic Education, and it is through Literary Reading in classrooms or school libraries that we contribute to the development of readers and, consequently, to better improve reading habits. This research's guiding question is: What is the importance of literary reading in basic education? What is the relevance of literary genres as learning practices? And what is the role of the library in the school environment? Using a systematic review methodology, the research analyzed scientific works published between 2018 and 2022 on the following websites: Fundação Pública CECIERJ, PERIÓDICOS CAPES, and SCIELO. The objective of this research is to analyze and implement literary reading practices in basic education as a tool to develop readers aware of the need for literature at all levels of education. The research uses structured descriptors in DeCS and MeSH. The data collection period ran from June 2023. Scientific articles related to the topic published less than five years ago were used as inclusion criteria, and scientific articles that did not address the importance of literary reading in basic education were used as exclusion criteria. Given the above, it is important to introduce Literary Reading or digital Literary Reading to all levels of education, from elementary to high school, so that students can become familiar with various literary genres from a young age, occupying all school spaces, both in the classroom and in libraries. This will consequently contribute to more effective teaching and learning.
