Abstract

Anorexia of aging is a developing concept that involves aging-related loss of appetite with the potential to promote adverse health outcomes. The objective of this study was to identify the risk of anorexia of aging and its related factors among community-dwelling older adults. Therefore, an exploratory study was conducted with 68 elderly participants participating in a municipal program in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro, to administer the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (QNSA). Of those studied, 19% were at risk for anorexia of aging. The sample showed that the risk of weight loss was more common in women (57%) and in the 70-79 age group (60%). Even with a high Body Mass Index (BMI), some older individuals were at risk of weight loss in the last six months (70%), meaning that the risk of anorexia of aging may coexist with overweight. The QNSA has proven to be a practical screening tool, but it does not replace an in-depth analysis of psychosocial and clinical factors. It is important to follow up on nutritional assessment in these elderly individuals identified as at risk during screening. However, the importance of early identification and continuous monitoring of the nutritional status of elderly individuals is highlighted.
