Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) constitutes a public health problem, with treatment adherence being a crucial obstacle. This cross-sectional and quantitative study aimed to investigate the correlation between self-rated health (SRH) and adherence to treatment (medication, physical activity, and diet) in 50 T2DM patients treated at a university outpatient clinic. Descriptive data revealed a high cardiovascular risk profile in the sample, with a mean BMI of 30.9 +6.7 kg/m2. High adherence to drug treatment (88%) was verified, in contrast to low adherence to physical activity (26%) and diet (26%). Although 76% of the volunteers had a "Fair" or "Good" SRH, the Spearman correlation analysis found no statistically significant associations between SRH and adherence to the three treatment components (p > 0.05). It is concluded that subjective and general self-rated health, in isolation, did not influence adherence to the T2DM treatment type in this population. The discrepancy in adherence reinforces the need for intervention programs focused on educational and motivational strategies to overcome the specific barriers to lifestyle modifications.
