Abstract

In Brazil, traditional monitoring of tailings dams has proven unsustainable and inefficient, resulting in catastrophic events such as severe environmental pollution, loss of cultural and environmental heritage, and, most importantly, loss of human lives. To address the constant threat posed by these critical infrastructures, the development of a Digital Twin (DT) is proposed, representing a synergy between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT). The article suggests the adoption of this technology as a compensatory measure for the direct and indirect damage caused to the environment. The proposed modeling aims to utilize automated verification and control stations as a tool for structural safety analysis under 24/7 monitoring. The methodology involves the architecture of telemetry systems for the integration of geotechnical data into the BIM model. It is understood that the use of this system favors risk mitigation since it establishes real-time monitoring of structures, drastically reducing the mean response time (MRT) and increasing the safety factor for local workers and the population surrounding the risk area. The BIM+IOT model is expected to contribute to safety management by sharing real-time information with public emergency services; a predictive approach is also expected, detecting anomalies such as differential settlements and pore pressure peaks with critical advance notice, in contrast to the latency of reactive methods.
